Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Pelvic floor physiotherapy aims to alleviate your problems by strengthening your pelvic floor muscles through a combination of exercises, dietary changes, and manual therapy. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is not just limited to Kegel exercise. There are a number of causes of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. Besides aging, pregnancy and childbirth, and excess consumption of steroids are major triggers.

A strong pelvic floor is important for people of all ages. When we talk about “the core,” we are referring to the region between the diaphragm and the bottom of the pelvis. Common symptoms of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction include incontinence, painful sexual interplay, increased urgency, and pelvic discomfort. They appear as the pelvic floor muscles do not work properly.

What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?

Pelvic floor rehabilitation is a type of physiotherapy that has been demonstrated to help with a range of pelvic related issues.

Pelvic floor conditions such as incontinence and voiding dysfunction as well as pain and discomfort can be treated with physiotherapy in a number of ways. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can also help examine and improve painful intercourse as well as pelvic organ prolapse, dyspareunia, and diastasis recti.

A pelvic floor physiotherapist provides internal assessment (through vagina or rectum) to check the range of motion, health, and  strength of the soft tissue that surrounds the pelvic organs. By providing the proper feedback, education, and soft tissue work a pelvic floor physiotherapist helps relieve pain and/or bring back the strength to pelvic floor muscles which would ultimately improve the function of pelvic organs.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy focuses on pelvic floor muscle discomfort, weakness, and dysfunction. This specialty involves the muscles and tissues that form a sling-like structure in the lower pelvis. The pelvic muscles are essential to the body, as they support the bladder, bowel, and uterus.

Conditions That Pelvic Floor Therapy Treats

Our physiotherapists at Ranch View Physiotherapy treat various pelvic conditions. Our techniques and treatments will depend on the symptoms and condition you’ve been experiencing.

Conditions that can be improved with pelvic floor physiotherapy include:

Urinary incontinence and bowel problems

Bowel and bladder control problems, such as leakage or increased urgency.

Interstitial cystitis (IC)

Pelvic pain, bladder pain, uncomfortable pressure, and a frequent urge to urinate are all symptoms of IC.

Pelvic and lower abdominal pain

Pain in the lower abdomen and pelvis, ranging from a sharp jab to a dull aching. Pain in the vaginal area and/or rectum is also possible.

Sexual dysfunction

Pelvic floor symptoms can cause issues like reduced sexual arousal, infrequent orgasm, and dyspareunia (genital pain that occurs before, during, or after intercourse).

The treatments involved in your pelvic floor rehabilitation plan will be dependent upon the results of your initial assessment. Your injury or condition will be evaluated during a physical examination, and then a qualified physical therapist will form a treatment plan that will address your specific needs. This will typically include several forms of exercise and massage to reduce pain, lessen symptoms, and potentially heal your condition.
